Shopian shuts against the illegal detention of a local youth
SHOPIAN; 24, July 2013: A Complete Shutdown was observed today in South Kashmir’s Shopian town against the illegal detention of a local youth Zubair Ahmad Turey. 19 year old Zubair was booked under public safety act (PSA) during the protests against the hanging of Afzal Guru in New Delhi’s Tihar Jail on 9th Feb.
In the previous week, Zubair completed his punishment and was transferred to Shopian Police Station, but the local police is not releasing him.
The youth of the town yesterday evening urged all shop keepers to observe a complete shutdown until Zubair will be released.
All the shops, business establishments, banks etc today remained closed. Traffic remained off the road however private vehicles was plying. Attendance in government offices also remained thin. A few stone-pelting incidents were also reported from Tak Mohalla area of the main town., Police used tear-canisters to disperse the protesters.
Meanwhile the Trade and Manufacturers Federation Shopian have assured the youth that Zubair will be released within three days. The Trade Federation President Ghulam Nabi Turey asked people to resume their work from tomorrow and if Zubair will not be released within three days, then an agitation will be launched against the police.
The teenager Zubair was also hit by a pellet in the 2010 agitation and has been detained by Police various times.
According to Zubair’s father, “He was not a part of any protest that took place in the town after hanging of Afzal Guru, but Police is targeting him and is implicating him of false charges.”
