Unity Day Observed in Kashmir
KN DESK; 26. July 2013: Protests were held today in various parts of Kashmir on the call of Hurriyat Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
In a statement issued earlier this week, the veteran leader urged people to hold peaceful protests after Friday prayers to show unity with the Muslims of Jammu region. On 18th July, this year 7 people, who were protesting against the desecration of Holy Quran were martyred by 72 Bn of Indian Border Security forces in Gool village of Ramban District
Reports of protests were recevied from Shopian, Pulwama, Tral, Hajin, Sopore, Baramulla etc. Rallies chanting pro-freedom, pro-islamic and anti-indian slogans, carrying placards written with messages like, "Muslim Ummah is One", "We are with you - Jammu Muslims" etc were taken out in various areas.
A few stone-pelting incidents were also reported from Shopian, Pulwama and other areas however Police and Paramilitary troopers lobbed tear-canisters to disperse the protesters.
