Protest held in LD Hospital over Infant's death

SRINAGAR; 12, Sep 2012: The death of a new born and the mother slipping into a life threatening condition allegedly due to the negligence of doctors at the Valley’s lone maternity care hospital— Lal Ded— led to massive protests by the family of the deceased outside the premises. The hospital administration had to press in the police to contain the protesters.

Family members of 25-year-old, Mehbooba Bano, staged protest outside the maternity hospital in Srinagar on Wednesday, after the death of her new born. The family members claimed the ‘negligence of doctors’ led to the death.

According to the family, Bano, from South Kashmir’s Kakpora village, was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday morning. “She was in normal condition when we admitted her here. Till the last hour doctors said she is in normal condition and will go through a normal delivery,” said, a family member, Ghulam Rasool, who was shouting slogans against the doctors outside the hospital.

“But it is all the negligence of the doctors most of them are juniors. She suddenly lost all the blood,” he claimed.

Lal Ded hospital is the only special maternity hospital in Kashmir where women from far flung areas come for treatment.

Her relatives said the new born was Bano’s first child, adding, doctors at the last moment said her uterus was to be ‘removed immediately’. “This is her first delivery and if there were some complications, why did not doctors tell us before?” shouted another relative of Bano.

Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Lone, Bano’s brother said she was going through intense labour pain. “We insisted the doctors to go for caesarean section but they refused to go for it and delayed the surgery which claimed the life of the baby,” Lone alleged.

Large numbers of police forces were called outside the hospital to stop the protests which had turned violent.

Bano’s condition was said to be life threatening. She was shifted to Sheri Maharaja Hari Singh hospital (SMHS), Srinagar. “We know she (Mehbooba) has also died, had she not died? There would not have been so much police force present here to stop our protests,” cried, her cousin, Hameeda Bano.

One of the doctors at hospital confirmed that the new born died and Bano is in a critical condition. “We shifted her in critical care ambulance to SMHS hospital, she is still alive, but we can’t say anything, her fetus was already exposed to infection due to leaking of membranes that is why the baby died,” said, a doctor, wishing not be named.

Medical Superintendent, Lal Ded Hospital, Dr Mushtaq Ahmad, said: the woman came with a leaking of membranes and baby died inside the uterus after she was operated with a caesarean section. “We induced the pregnancy in her as the baby has already dead and she was an ‘Intra Uterine Death (IUD)’ case”.

He said the team of doctors examined the lady and it was due to the external infection the infant died. “During the delivery she developed the Post Partum Hemorrhage (PPH) due to which we had to remove her uterus after taking consent,” Dr Ahmad said.

He said an enquiry team headed was constituted by Head of the Department, Dr Shahnaz Taing to probe into the family claim.

This is not the first time when the death of a new born baby has caused protests in the hospital. Similar protests have been common at the hospital and many probe teams have been set in the past.
