Qaid calls for Shutdown on 4th Sep
SRINAGAR: 01, Sep 2012: All parties Hurriyat Conference Chairman, Qaid-e-Inquilab Syed Ali Geelani calls for shutdown on Sept 04, 2012 against "politicisation" of Amarnath Yatra. He was addressing a press conference today at Hyderpora Srinagar.
Challenging the Supreme Court over its order to construct road to the Hindu cave shrine, Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Saturday declared that his amalgam would launch an agitation against the ‘government control’ over Amarnath pilgrimage and Muslim shrines in Jammu and Kashmir.
Calling for shutdown on Tuesday, the Hurriyat leader said Amarnath pilgrimage is being politicized and government is trying to make a wedge between Kashmiri Muslims and Pandits.”We are not against pilgrimage and we welcome pilgrims, but the way government is controlling it for political gains is not acceptable to us,” he said and urged ‘people to observe a shutdown on Tuesday against the cultural onslaught launched against Kashmir people’.
Addressing a press conference at his Hyderpora residence, 83-year-old Geelani warned government of ‘dire consequences’ in case ‘it keeps on controlling religious institutions in Kashmir’.
He said ‘on one side India talks high about its democratic nature but in reality its fascist and undemocratic face speaks volumes in Kashmir’.
“Who has told you that Amarnath land has been given back to us? Amarnath land, comprising of
800 kanals is yet to be given back. It is sub-judice and yet Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) is using it for its own purpose. We want it back before we come on roads,” Geelani said, adding, ‘when Indian forces raped thousands of women and killed lakhs of innocents, its Supreme Court was silent then’.
“This puppet government in J&K has no power and dances on the tunes of Delhi. Amarnath Yatra is going on from last 145 years and Kashmiri’s have never objected over this Yatra. But we feel that government is politicizing it and the innumerable pilgrims that are being pushed into Kashmir is a threat to our ecology,” he said.
He said Kashmiri’s were never against the pilgrimage, but India ‘was giving it a political color only to continue its political, military and cultural aggression in Kashmir’.
“It is the NC during the tenure of Farooq Abdullah who created shrine board. This board works like East India Company to strengthen Indian occupation on Kashmir,” said the octogenarian leader.
Geelani said pilgrimage was started in 1867 and was smoothly running with Kashmiri Muslims and Pandits extending every kind of help, but ‘one fails to understand why shrine board was created’.
“The Shrine board should be soon dissolved and the duty of running smooth pilgrimage should be given to local Pandits who had performed it in past as well,” said Geelani.
While replying to a question, Geelani said that it is truth that this (Amarnath) ‘is being used as launching pad for communal violence by New Delhi and the hard core Hindu’s’.
Referring to an article published in ‘Frontline’,
Geelani said that the article describes pilgrimage as to be a ‘communal invasion more than a religious ritual’. “I must tell you that the article published in Frontline describes reality. It says that Amarnath Cave situated at the height of 13500 feet above Sea level has becoming launching pad for communal Hindus and it offers very less as far as religion is concerned.”
He said that more than 6 lakh people are being encouraged to offer pilgrimage and one should not get surprised if 100 odd pilgrims die due to crossing the difficult terrains. “It is being politicizing while the pure hearted Hindus are being as tool by the hard core ones.”
“Just a few hundred pilgrims would come for pilgrimage until 1990s, but this year more than 6 lakh visited the shrine. The Supreme Court of India wants to have a road constructed up to the shrine. They want to convey to us that they will not leave Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.
He said that Sheesh Nag Glacier is melting while as the ‘senseless and biased’ order of Supreme Court to construct macadamized road will pose a serious threat to ecology.
“For Gangotri Yatra, Utrakhand Government has restricted the number of yatris up to 150 a single day while the government here is allowing thousands of yatris to visit the Cave. Don’t you think it speaks of double standard?” He said.
Geelani said on the one hand the control of Amarnath yatra lies in the hand s of State Governor while on the other hand the state government has occupied the Muslim religious institutions. “If the government will not give us our religious institutions back, we will launch an agitation and will come on roads.”
The resistance leader came down heavily on Bhartiya Janata Party, castigating them for persecuting Muslims in the Assam and other parts of India.
Geelani accused the central Intelligence agencies
and New Delhi for spreading immorality among the younger generations of Kashmiris.
He also alleged the GoI of exploiting the natural resources of the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
Geelani said the real representatives of Kashmir are not allowed to meet people and have been kept cut off from people and media is our only hope and bridge to reach our voice to the oppressed people.
"I appeal the journalists to use their pen to give voice to sufferings of people and freedom movement,” he said.
