Police persecuting Rohingiya Muslims in Jammu
SRINAGAR; 23, Oct 2012: Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Tuesday castigated the state government for 'persecuting' Rohingiya Muslims, who have taken shelter in Jammu after fleeing for life in Myanmar following attempts of alleged ethnic cleansing there'.
A statement issued by the Hurriyat Conference (G) said that police was asking the Rohingiyas in Jammu to leave the city.
“The Hurriyat chairman has expressed his concern over the police warning to the Rohingiyas, who are living a life of refugees, to vacate their locations in Jammu and has asked the state government to explain the issue,” the statement said.
Geelani said that the “move was a handiwork of communal elements within the state police.”
“Since these elements want to make Jammu 'a testing ground' for the Hindutva, they don’t tolerate the existence of Muslims there,” Geelani said.
“Hurriyat Chairman has condemned the statement of Deputy Superintendent of Police, Jammu (East), that he was not concerned where these people will go,” the statement said.
Geelani, "while appealing Muslims of Jammu to help their brethren in this trying situation has asked state government to explain whether it was police’s own initiative or policy of the
government".
