HAWAL MASSACRE SHRC seeks reports from Div Com, DGP
SRINAGAR; 22, April 2013: The J&K State Human Rights Commission has asked Divisional Commissioner Kashmir and Director General of Police to submit their respective reports by May 2 regarding the Hawal massacre that occurred on May 21, 1990.
The reports were sought by two-member bench of SHRC comprising Javed Kawoosa and Rafiq Fida on a petition filed by International Forum for Justice and Human Rights Forum, seeking investigation into the Hawal Massacre.
Besides investigation, the IFJHRF headed by Ahsan Untoo also seeks compensation to the kins of those killed as well as for those injured in the massacre.
Terming the incident as “blackest day in the history of Kashmir”, the petitioner also seeks direction to the government to allow the “interested persons” to build memoriam in the name of those killed in the Hawal Massacre.
According to the petitioner, at-least 67 people were killed and hundreds injured when BSF troops opened fire on peaceful procession carrying body of Mirwaiz Kashmir Molana Mohammad Farooq on the fateful day. “Till date no enquiry was conducted in this case and the culprits are roaming freely. The act is one of the grave human rights violations and need the redressal by this Commission by constituting a special team to conduct the enquiry into the incident,” he added.
