Custodial murder of Bashir Ahmad Bhat, 12 years on family awaits justice
SRINAGAR; 11, May 2013: “My husband was killed in cold blood by Indian Army and SOG and yet no one involved in his killing have been brought to justice. We want to see culprits get booked and the case to be reinvestigated,” the wife of slain resident of North Kashmir’s Nesbal, Sumbal area told on Saturday alleging that his husband was killed when he was living a peaceful life.
“Bashir started living a peaceful life soon after his release. He used to earn his living by imparting education to little ones in Darasgah, however security agencies did not let him go and used to harass him on the one or the other pretext,” his wife Syeda Begum told.
She said unfortunately at that time a fruit truck carrying some arms and ammunitions were seized at Ganderbal by Indian Army and the blame was put on Bashir. “He was innocent and had nothing to do with it. To save himself from the wrath of the Security Agencies, my husband went underground. On 17 May, 2001, he was arrested by SOG and Indian Army in Srinagar while visiting Makdhoom Sahab shrine,” she said adding that next day he was brought back to his native village and was gunned down in fake encounter.
Her wife alleged that his husband was killed in cold blood as he had bluntly refused to join the ranks of renegades who were ruling the area at that time.
“I have four children and all are innocent. I am living from hand to mouth. Nobody helped came forward for our help,” she said adding that she has brought this issue into the notice of State Human Rights Commission and she hopes that culprits will be brought to justice.
