Indian Army Chopper crashes in Siachen

SRINAGAR; 13, May 2013: Two pilots of Indian Army sustained injuries when their chopper crashed on Monday at the Siachen Glaciers near Pakistani border in Indian-administered Kashmir, army officials said.

"The helicopter was on a normal air maintenance operation near our forward post when it crashed mid air," army Spokesperson Lt Colonel Rajesh Kalia told kmr news over phone.

He said two pilots sustained injuries when their helicopter Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) 'Dhruv' crashed. "We're investigating what caused the crash," he said.

Siachen remains world's highest battle field where almost 20,000 Indian and Pakistani army personnel maintain an eyeball-to-eyeball contact with each other. Recently, both countries talked about withdrawing troops from the area following avalanches that buried alive soldiers on either sides.

More troops have died from hostile weather and accidents like this in the Siachen glacier than from military action ever since India entered the heights in 1984 fearing Pakistan's take-over.
