SKIMS launches anti-smoking drive: 150 Smokers fined

SRINAGAR; 17, May 2013: SKIMS has launched anti-smoking drive to keep SKIMS premises smoking free. One fifty (150) people have been fined so far for smoking in the premises from past one month.

Director SKIMS & Ex-officio Secretary to Govt. has made fervent appeal to the people visiting SKIMS to keep SKIMS smoking free and join hands in this campaign to make it successful. He said drive has been launched and our efforts are to make it sustained drive against smoking which has hazards effects on people’shealth and is a known cause for life threatening diseases like cancer. The objective of the initiative is to send a strong message across and strict measures will be taken against those found guilty, he added.

SKIMS Senior security officer Mr. J.B Singh informed about 150 people were fined for smoking in the premises. He informed some people even smoke in hospital toilets and then throw bids(residue) in shafts which has greater risk to cause fire which can have disaster effect. The drive is showing positive results so far and SKIMS will continue the sustained campaign as directed by director SKIMS.

Experts at SKIMS say, people are at a significant risk of premature death and smoking-related illnesses such as heart and lung disease, cancers and vascular diseases, among many other conditions. But there's very strong scientific evidence that anti- smoking programs make a big difference in encouraging people to quit and a larger number of people do quit long term because of such initiatives. That's been well documented internationally as well as nationally.

Smoking is injurious to health but smoking in hospital premises has added disadvantage as it causes greater inconvenience to patients who already suffer from complications because of serious health problems.

SKIMS conduct counseling sessions for such people to make them aware about the ill effects of smoking and its effect on non-smokers as well and also solicit cooperation of general public in this endeavor to make SKIMS smoking free which is in patient interest and people.
