4000 Quintals of Sugar missing from CAPD Godowns
SRINAGAR; 04, Aug, 2013: At a time when Valley is facing acute sugar crisis that too in the holy month of Ramadan, sources within the Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) department told that around 4000 quintals of sugar is missing from the CAPD godowns.
According to official sources, the development came after the CAPD department carried out an inquiry in the form of ‘Zero Balancing’ to check the actual status of sugar within some godowns. “During the inquiry, a large quantity of sugar was found missing from the Shaheedgunj godown and it is quantity is said to be about 4000 quintals,” sources told.
Sources further said, “A team of Vigilance Organization of Kashmir (VOK) also raided the Shaheedgunj godown following a complaint lodged with VOK, which found that there is a huge quantity of sugar missing from the CAPD godowns. "
However, the authorities from the CAPD department refute the claims that there was any Vigilance enquiry in the matter.
When contacted Minister for CAPD, Choudary Ramzan said, “We have detected that there was some quantity of sugar missing from the godown,it was not the VOK and action have been taken against the defaulters a week before. " He further said that the zero balancing process in another godown would get completed within a week’s time.
Meanwhile, President Kashmir Economic Alliance (KEA), Muhammad Yasin Khan said that it is not the first time, such things are happening in the CAPD department, the trend has been going on from years now, which needs to be stopped ,as common-people are facing the brunt of it. “This is a matter of concern, why such things happen and people are made to suffer. It is the responsibility of government to look into the matter seriously and whosoever is involved should be dealt strictly,” Khan added.
However, Director CAPD, Mushtaq Ahmad said the inquiry is still in process and it would be premature to say whether sugar was missing from these godowns or not, but the possibility cannot be ruled out.
“There has never been zero balancing of food grains in the department but this year we did it as per the directions of minister, which will take few more days to get completed. It is too early to say whether sugar was missing from these godowns or not, as the enquiry is still on,” he added.
