SRINAGAR; 06, Aug, 2013: Violence erupted in downtown Srinagar on Monday night, as Muslims across the Kashmir valley thronged mosques and shrines to pray on the Laylat Al-Qadr or the 27th night of Ramadan.

Eyewitnesses told that dozens of youth have been injured in clashes with the police in Nowhatta, Sarafkadal and Kawdara areas in old quarters of the city.

They said the Indian police and paramilitaries fired tear smoke shells and pellet guns to disperse the protesters who threw stones at them. More than 15 youth have also been arrested.

A resident of Kawdara area told us that the paramilitary CRPF personnel went on a rampage in the area soon after the protests.

He said frantic CRPF personnel broke windshields of more than a dozen vehicles parked on roads with their batons and rocks. “One fellow who had come to a mosque here from Bemina had parked his car in a bylane. When he returned after praying he found it damaged,” an eyewitness, who wished not to be named, said. he said the CRPF personnel also threw stones at residential houses and smashed window panes, apparently enraged by protesting youth.
