Downtown residents treated as second-class citizens: Mirwaiz
SRINAGAR; 23, Aug 2013: The Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq sees “government’s indifference towards old city” as the reason for inaction in getting rid of the stench emanating from Achan garbage dump.
“People of downtown have been branded with a particular school of thought; they are treated as second-class citizens. If a similar issue would have occurred elsewhere, the government would have made hue and cry,” Mirwaiz told.
He took a dig at the state government saying the latter had failed even in administrative affairs.
“It has become a serious issue as the entire population of the downtown has been affected because of the government’s failure to curb Achan stench. The stench is becoming a health hazard and people are falling sick, they are not able to open doors and windows of their houses,” Mirwaiz said.
Mirwaiz said that in this day and age of technology the state government has failed to dump the garbage scientifically. “As such the garbage dump should be shifted away from the summer capital to somewhere elsewhere.”
