Geelani called for protests after Eid Prayers
SRINAGAR; 07, Aug 2013: Chairman of Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Wednesday appealed people to stage peaceful protests over various issues including judicial murder of Shaheed Mohammad Afzal Guroo, recent civilian killings and arrests of youth in Jammu and Kashmir.
In case authorities allow him, the octogenarian leader also announced to offer ensuing Eid prayers at famed Hazratbal in outskirts of Srinagar.
In a statement issued here, Geelani appealed for peaceful demonstrations after Eid prayers against the atrocities related to judicial murder of Shaheed Mohammad Afzal Guroo, brutal killings of Tahir Ahmad Sofi, Mudasir Kamran, Ubair Mushtaq, Tariq Ahmad Bhat, Abdul Rashid Sheikh, Mohammud Yusuf Sofi, Hajra Begum, Riyaz Ahmad khanday, and Altaf Ahmad Wani by Inidan forces, Markundal Sumbal episode, Desecration of Holy Quran in Gool Ramban, and detention of political prisoners.
Syed Ali Shah Geelani said that despite tall claims made by Omer Abdullah-led regime about peace and stability, the killing of innocent continues “unabated” and “state terrorism” is at its peak.
In his appeal, Geelani stressed upon the people to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr in a dignified and simple way.
“Keeping in view the present grave situation when with each passing day we shoulder the coffins of our near and dears, we should not ignore the fact that our youngsters are offering precious sacrifices for freedom within ambit of Islam,” he said.
Commenting over uproar in Parliament and “rhetoric” created by electronic and print media over the killing of 5 forces personnel on LoC, he said that although it is comprehensible that a country loses his five young soldiers, a criminal silence is observed when innocent civilians are killed in Jammu and Kashmir, and even not a single person comes to express his sympathy.
Referring to the judicial murder of Mohammad Afzal Guroo said that in his case all norms were ignored and the demand for return of mortal remains turned down.
“Though Prime MinisterManmohan Singh in a bid to mislead the world opinion said that authorities should have informed his family before his execution but continuous protest demonstration and killing of six innocents, the demand for return of mortal remains was turned down.”
He also expressed grief over the way the authorities reacted to Gool Incident, emphasizing that a simple and formal ‘sorry’ won’t help.
While recalling the episode, he said that forces in a deliberate attempt desecrated Holy Quran and assassinated four innocents.
“Markandal incident was not discussed in Indian parliament while referring to the brutal killings of two youth at Markundal Sumbal,” he said.
Geelani said that 574 persons affiliated to the movement are detained and despite court orders are not released even on the eve of Eid ul Fitr.
“I am being denied the right to offer prayers and forcibly confined to my residence,” said Syed Ali Geelani. “This type of lawlessness though being formulated in Delhi, is practiced by Omer Abdullah.” Hurriyat Chairman said that situation demands that people should tell the world about the prevailing grave situation in Kashmir and “the excesses and atrocities” being perpetrated by India.
