Internet Service Remains Suspended on Day 2 in Kashmir

SRINAGAR; 12, Aug 2013: The internet service continue to remains suspended in the Kashmir valley on the second consecutive day today.

Although the authorities claim that the move is being taken to prevent spreading of rumors but the internet users accuse authorities that they want to hide the real facts and are giving biased media a free-hand to report the news according to their wishes.

Yesterday, authorities snapped internet service of different Cellular companies including 3G network of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Airtel and Reliance since yesterday, badly affecting media, students, doctors and other professions in the valley.

However, the broadband service of BSNL through landline phones was working normally, though with very less speed.

This is the third time that the internet service was stopped in the valley during 2013. The internet service remained suspended for about a week after the Shaheed Afzal Guru was hanged in Delhi’s Tihar jail on February 9. The service also remained suspended in March after the death of two youths in an alleged Indian army firing in Baramulla.

SMS service on pre-paid mobile phones of all companies remained suspended since 2010, when more than 120 people, mostly youths, were killed by the Indian forces and police personnel during demonstrations.

Local news channels on cable also remained banned since 2010 and government officials have been directed not to participate in any discussion on cable channel.
