Shabir Shah Detained at Singhpora
BARAMULLA; 23, Aug 2013: Senior pro-freedom leader and Chairman Democratic Freedom Party Shabir Ahmad Shah alongwith his dozens of associates were detained by police at Singhpora on their way to Palhallan on Friday.

In a statement a spokesperson of the party while condemning the repeated arrest of its chairman termed it “government’s frustration”. “From the last two and a half years, Shah has been kept under house arrest or detention in police custody for one year two months and 16 days. During such period, Shah was prevented from offering 10 congregational Friday prayers.”
Terming Shah’s repeated arrest as undemocratic and dictatorial policy of government, the spokesperson said, “It is against the democratic norms to keep bare the political opponents from performing their peaceful political activities.”
The spokesperson made it clear that in order to cover up their undemocratic and anti-people activities ‘the government is preventing pro-freedom leaders from meeting people.’ Terming the government’s ‘imperialistic policy as threat to democracy’, he expressed hope that pro-freedom nation will never come under the ‘deception of these rulers and they will continue their political struggle for freedom.’
Meanwhile, on the directions of party chairman, Muhammad Yasin Ataai made it to Palhallan where he addressed at Central Jamia Masjid. Waheed Ahmad also while addressing the public gathering condemned Shah’s arrest. He said that to keep pro-freedom leaders away from expressing solidarity with martyrs and to express sympathy with the bereaved families is totally contrary to the essence of democracy.
“The government’s policy of keeping its political opponents away from people will reap serious repercussions,” he said.
After Friday payers, Ataai, Waheed, Muhammad Ibraheem, Jahangir Ahmad, Abdul Rashid, Imtiyaz Ahmad, Naseer Ahmad and dozens other activists made it to Mazaar-e-Shuhadaa (martyrs’ graveyard) where they paid tributes to martyrs. (KNS)
