Shopian shuts on the 5th Consecutive Day; Omar inaugurates Turkwangam Bridge
SHOPIAN; 21, Aug 2013: Complete Shutdown continued in Shopian on the 5th consecutive day, Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir was scheduled to visit for inauguration of Turkawangam Bridge. However no violent clashes were reported today. The authorities have sounded a high alert in the district, with heavy deployment of security forces to prevent any unfavoured incident.
All the shops and business establishments remain closed. Vehicular movement also remained paralyzed.
The youth are protesting against the alleged high-handness of Police and are demanding the release of arrested youth.
Meanwhile some locals from Imamsahib area alleged that Panic gripped in Imamsahib Shopian when Police using excessive force tried to make things normal and beat several shopkeepers.
People of Imamsahib later protested against the high handedness of Police. Eye witnesses said, some angry youth from Nagabal Shopian burnt National Conference posters and banners and blocked the road revolting the Omar Abdullah's entry in the area.
Later Omar Abdullah after inauguration of Turkawangam bridge addressed a public gathering mainly attended by NC activists at Ribbon Khojpora in Watchi constituency. In his speech, he made a comparison between NC govt and PDP govt.
He said, "They (PDP) forgot all issues while in power and we strived for political addressing of political issues and pushing forward development on fast track."
The 190 metres long Turkwangam Bridge constructed at a cost of Rs. 12.63 crore, will upgrade connectivity between the three districts of Pulwama, Kulgam and Shopian. It will also help to expand Lassipora Industrial Estate upto Turkwangam and connect fruit areas of Lassipora, Pulwama and Kulgam wilth Shopian district.
Minister for Social Welfare, Sakina Itoo, Legislator and Provincial President Kashmir National Conference, Nasir Aslam Wani, MLCs Showkat Ahmad and Abdul Majid also addressed the public meet.
