Violent Clashes in Shopian on Day 3

SHOPIAN; 19, Aug 2013: Violent Clashes continued in South Kashmir's Shopian town on the 3rd consecutive day.

Although authorities today morning deployed a large contigenent of forces at Tak Mohalla Shopian and at other areas. However Youth assembled and resorted to heavy stone-pelting on the forces.

Locals alleged that police went berserk and broke the window panes of many vehicles and houses in Tak Mohalla and Gratwali Mohalla. Some drivers were also beaten up by CRPF troopers.

Police while conducting night raids came under attack in New Colony Alyalpora, after announcements were made on loudspeakers urging people to come on streets.

Meanwhile, some copies of local dailies were also torched as a mark of protest against the silence of media over the incident.

Some locals informed us on phone that three persons were arrested today and two protesters also sustained minor injuries. Intensified clashes continued till the last reports came. Police lobbed numerous tear-canisters and sound shells to disperse the angry mobs.

The youth are protesting against the alleged desecration of Holy Quran in Bonabazar area of Shopian on 17th of August.

District Commissioner Shopian, Bashir Ahmad Bhat while refuting the allegations said, "no such incident occurred in the town. These are the some anti-social elements who want to destroy the peace in the district."

The youth are demanding that an international probe should be conducted in the incident, all the arrested youth should be released, compensation to the two houses that were allegedly damaged by Police on 17th Aug, transference of DC and SHO.

Meanwhile during the evening hours, Locals have alleged that CRPF personnel went on rampage in Tak Mohalla area of main town and damaged the property worth lacs, three bikes, 7 cars, window panes and glasses of several houses were allegedly damaged by the CRPF troopers.
