16-yr-old girl abducted & gang-raped by JKP men
REASI; 15, Sep 2013: A 16-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by three police men in Reasi district sparking outrage across Jammu region.
The police have arrested an assistant sub inspector and a special police officer while the third accused is on the run. Protests rocked the area with people blocking the road demanding death penalty to the rapists.
Family members said the trio abducted the girl after raiding their house at Talwara migrant camp. The father of the girl lodged a complaint with the police which immediately raided a suspected hideout at Mari village.
The police rescued the girl and arrested two of the accused while the third police man, who is working as personal assistant of a senior police officer, fled from the scene.
“We have arrested two persons. Her father had reported that she was abducted from their home. So we have registered a case under appropriate sections of the law. We are waiting for the medical report and the statement of the girl. We will produce her before the court for recording the statement (and the rape charges will be added up),” Garib Das, deputy inspector general of police, Udhampur-Reasi range, told
The girl belongs to a poor family who had migrated to Talwara after facing militant threats. “I am a poor man. They have ruined the life of my daughter,” said her father.
Massive protests rocked Reasi as the news of the rape spread in the area.
Hundreds of people took to streets and blocked Katra-Shiv Khori road demanding justice. “Death to rapists…We want justice,” rent the air as people staged a sit-in on a strategic bridge on the Chenab. Senior officers of the area rushed to the scene and assured the people that action would be taken within 48 hours. “We will wait till Monday. If action is not taken and all the people not arrested, we will again stage agitation,” said a protester.
