Activist Files Petition before SHRC for Shopian Killings

SRINAGAR; 10, Sep 2013: Syed Abdul Rashid Bukhari, a social activist from Budgam, on Monday filed a petition before the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) seeking registration of FIRs under the relevant provisions of the RPC against the CRPF personnel involved in Saturday's killings in Gagren Shopian.

The petition sought the immediate suspension and arrest of the CRPF men and steps to check such incidents in future. The petition also seeks compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased.

On Saturday, four people were killed in Gagran area of Shopian district, after troopers of 14Bn of CRPF opened unprovoked firing on civilians who were passing on the road.

Meanwhile, taking a suo-motu notice of the matter, SHRC sent notices to state police chief Ashok Prasad and deputy commissioner Shopian Bashir Ahmad Bhat, secretary SHRC Tariq Banday said. Banday said the SHRC has asked the DGP and DC to submit a detailed report by October 25.
