Baramulla Shuts on 2nd Consecutive Day against the Arrests
BARAMULLA: 24, Sep 2013: A complete shutdown amid protests was observed on the second day in Baramulla town of North Kashmir on Tuesday against the arrests of youth on charges of stone hurling.
Witness said that all the shops and business establishments remained closed while traffic was off the roads. Police arrested scores of youth from the town on the charges of stone pelting and enforcing a shutdown in the town.The town had also observed shutdown on Monday against the arrests of some shop keepers.
Protests erupted at several places in the town against the arrests of youth.
Tension gripped the town in morning when scores of youth protested and pelted stones on men in uniform.
A senior police official denied any stone pelting incident. “There was no stone pelting today in the town. The people had stopped the vehicular movement only for some time and after that situation was normal again,” he said.
Additional contingents of police and CRPF were deployed in the town to bring the situation under control.
Senior official of police said action against the youth involved in stone pelting would continue. “We had arrested some youth who are involved in stone pelting incidents in the town. We are identifying the stone palters and they will be booked under law. No one will be allowed to disturb peace in the town,” he said.
President of the local trade body, Beopar Mandal of Baramullah, said that they had called off the strike on Monday evening as all the shopkeepers, who were also detained, were released.
