Curfew continues in Shopian on Day 9; Normalcy returns in Valley

SHOPIAN; 16, Sep 2013: Curfew continues today for the 9th day in South Kashmir's Shopian district after 5 civilians were killed by 14Bn of CRPF in Gagren area of the town during previous week.

Life returned to normal in other parts of valley after remaining shut for 2 consecutive days on the call of Hurriyat (G) Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani, to protest against the civilian killings in Shopian.

Shops, business establishments, petrol pumps, offices and educational institutions functioned normally in Srinagar city and other major towns across the valley. Public transport was also back on the roads.

Curfew was today lifted from Pulwama, Kakapora, Qaimoh and Kulgam towns after 4 days.

Deputy Commissioner Shopian Bashir Ahmad Bhat, said "Curfew will be lifted from the town after assessing the situation."

Hundreds of students returned back to their homes after they were denied to appear in examinations of 1st year and 2nd year at Government Degree College Shopian.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner, Shopian has notified for the information of candidates appearing for written test being conducted by Service Selection Board in District Shopian on September 17, 2013 that such of the candidates who were to appear in the written test at Government Degree College, Shopian centre shall now appear in the said examination at Rainbow International School Batapora, Shopian.

The admit cards of the students and the identity cards of the staff will be treated as curfew passes, the statement adds.
