Curfew continues in Shopian on 7th Day
SHOPIAN; 14, Sep 2013: Curfew was lifted from parts of Kulgam and Pulwama districts on Saturday, while it remained in force in Shopian Township for seventh day following killing of five persons in firing by security forces.
Curfew was relaxed in the town on wednesday however one more youth was killed allegedly by CRPF troopers due to which curfew was re-imposed in the town.
"The curfew has been lifted from everywhere except Shopian town, where it will continue today," a police spokesman said.
He said the restrictions were lifted as the situation remained by and large peaceful in Pulwama and Kulgam areas, barring a few minor clashes.
Meanwhile, a complete shut-down is being observed across the valley on the call of Hurriyat (G) Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani to protest against the Shopian innocent killings.
Police and paramilitary CRPF personnel have been deployed in strength in sensitive areas of the city as well as in major towns in the Valley as a precautionary measure, officials said.
Geelani on Thursday called for a two-day shutdown from today to protest the civilian killings.
