DAY 20: Amid Clashes, Shutdown continues in Shopian
SHOPIAN; 26, Sep 2013: Shut-down continues in south Kashmir’s Shopian town today on consecutive 20th day since the 5 killings took place in the Gagren area on 7th and 11th of September.
Authorities imposed a curfew on 8th of September which continues till 21st of September. Since then a shutdown is being observed in the town demanding complete removal of the CRPF camp in the area.
Government had already issued orders for the relocation of camp but locals alleged so far no exclusion had took place and have decided to go on strike until camp will be completely removed.
Normal life remained paralyzed in the town. Schools, College, Shops, Banks, Petrol pumps and other business establishments also remained closed. Streets wore a deserted look.
During the afternoon session, clashes broke out in the town which continued till evening hours. Police resorted tear-gas canisters to chase away the protesters.
Meanwhile Deputy Commissioner Shopian Bashir Ahmad Bhat, said, “The situation remained by and large peaceful, a few stone-pelting incidents occurred however police exercised a maximum restraint.”
