Incidents that led to Shopain Violence

The violence torn Shopian had also remained a centre of Political turmoil and a very senstive part of the valley. This time the violence had engulfed the whole valley as 5 civilians have been martyred by the occupying forces in the town during the past week The main incidents that led so much anger in the people are briefed as below

(1) On 15th of August, some youth pelted stones on children who took part in the August 15 functions that were held in Arhama Shopian.

(2) On 17th of August, On the call of Syed Ali Shah Geelani, some youth started a demonstration however Police and paramilitary forces barged into residential houses in Naikoo Mohalla of the area allegedly beat inmates and desecrated some religious scripture. Later a demonstration carrying the religious scripture marched through the town. Police and authorities refuted the allegations and claimed no such incident occurred in the town, it was a rumor by some facebook pages.

(3) Police started a massive crackdown against the youth and arrested many boys on charges of making rumors, some of the detained were arrested on charges of posting pictures of the torn religious scripture on facebook.

(3) Complete shutdown was observed in the town for five days, however after this some people hold a meeting with the Deputy commissioner Shopian  Bashir Ahmad Bhat, who assured them that they will look into the matter. A committee of 8 members including DC Shopian, ADC Shopian, 2 members of Bar Association, 2 members of Auqaf Commitee and 2 members of Trade federation was framed to submit the report on the prevailing situation.

(4) On 22nd of August, Shopian reopens partially however youth was demanding immediate release of the arrested youth. As the shopkeepers opened their shops, some youth during evening hours thrashed a few shopkeepers and a shut-down was again observed on the next day.

(5) On 23rd of August, CRPF and Police were deployed inside the residential areas to prevent protesting youth to enter in the town and the market reopened.

(6) Same deployment continued for next 12 days and Police raided houses of the protesting youth. Police detained family members of some youth while a few families complained that they have been beaten by police during nocturnal raids.

(7) On 3rd and 4th of September, Finally, many protesting youth surrendered and are still in police custody.

The normalcy was returning to the town however Zubin Mehta was invited by the state government and the veteran Hurriyat leader calls for shut-down in the valley on the day of event.

(8) On 7th of September, town was witnessing a shut-down, Tauseef Ah (killed by CRPF on the same day) went to his cousin and took his bike and was planned to go to Peer-ki-Gali (a famous picnic spot on Mughal road). When he reached near main market, his friend Aadil asked for help as he was going late for the 1st Year Exams that was being held in Government Degree College Shopian. Tauseef gave him lift and started to move towards the college. When he reached outside the CRPF camp in Gagren area, a few metres away from college, CRPF men on duty asked them to show identity cards. Both took out their identity cards and then troopers asked for registeration papers of the motor-cycle. Tauseef was not having registeration papers of the bike with him, so he told them, "His friend is going late for the exams, I will come back and will show you the registration papers." Then a CRPF trooper caught him and started beating him ruthlessly. Earlier in the morning, they also beat up another motorcyclist. Suddenly another CRPF man who was on duty opened fire on Tauseef and within no time the men inside the bunkers started raining of bullets on the civilians killing three on spot while injuring two Tauseef and Aadil. The three men who died on spot were later identified as Tariq Ahmad Mir S/O: Ghulam Nabi Mir, a resident of Okey Kulgam, a wallnut dealer, (ii)  Mohamad Yousuf a resident of Durpora Zainapora Shopian, who was working in a box-making factory in Zainapora and a non-local bihari mason, whose identity is yet to be ascertained. After one hour, Tauseef and Adil was took to District Hospital Shopian. Tauseef was having two bullets while Adil was having one. CRPF troopers didn't allowed the people to took them to hospital immediately later on the intervention of SHO Shopian Irshad Reshi, both were shifted to hospital. The Shopian Hospital, although a district hospital is not having such facilities to treat them, as per people it is worst than a dispensary and was attacked by the angry people at various times in the past. The duo was shifted to Srinagar for treatment. On reaching near to Pulwama, Tauseef succumbed. Adil was admitted in SMHS Hospital. The dead bodies of other three who died on spot as taken by Police.
As the news about the Tauseef's death spread in the area, people once again took to streets. The members of Trade and Manufacturer Association Shopian were appealed to come and took part in the protest against the killing as in earlier they assured people that no untoward incident will took place in the town. Later a few people, beat the Trade Association President Ghulam Nabi Turey ruthlessly, as per them he is an Indian agent and helped police to launch a massive crackdown against the youth.
Thousands offered funeral prayers of the Shaheed Tauseef and then came to know that there are three more dead bodies in District Police Lines. Protests continue till late evening. During night Police handed over the body of Tariq Ahmad Mir and Mohammad Yousuf to his relatives and the curfew was clamped in the town for three days.
During these days, the people repeatedly tried to defy the curfew and to stage the demonstrations. However Police exercised maximum restraint and didn't allowed people to come on streets. Roads connecting main town with the rest of area were sealed.

(9) Finally on 11th of September, Authorities lifted the Curfew in the town. During morning, some youth pelted stones on CRPF troopers near Gagren, who was on duty blocking the road and preventing people to enter in the main town. Later the protesters dispersed peacefully.
Muhammad Rafiq (Rafi) Rather, a resident of Bun Saidpora Shopian was coming to the town to his in-laws house, to see his 6 months old daughter and wife. However on reaching Gagren, he was targeted by CRPF troopers, the first shot missed him and he started to flee but the second shot hit him from back side and pierced through body. He fell down after a while youth gathered and took him to Vehil hospital but he succumbed on way.
The body was took by people in Meemander and they started marching towards main town. The way was passing by the CRPF camp. When the funeral procession reached there, CRPF troopers lobbed tear-canisters but the angry people showed resistance and keep marching towards the camp. When half of the people passed the camp, CRPF again opened fire resulting in injuries to two more persons, among the injured one Asiya Jan of Meemander was hit in her eye and later lost her eye-sight in SMHS Hospital. Police tried to re-impose curfew but was defied by the people. Veteran leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani called for valley wide shutdown on 12th, 14th and 15th September.

(10) From 12th of September, Curfew was again clamped in the town, But amid curfew stone-pelting incidents are reported from various parts of the town. Dozen of youth continue to remain under police custody since 1st week of September.
