Shopian civil society calls off strike, threatens ‘mass migration’

SHOPIAN; 28, Sep 2013: Due to increase in shortage of essential commodities that caused following continuous curfews and strikes in South Kashmir’s Shopian district, the civil society and various traders on Saturday unanimously decided to call off the strike. They, however, warned government of resorting to mass migration provided it failed to remove the Gagran camp under a given deadline.

While talking to a local news agency, Traders Federation President, Shopian, Ghulam Nabi Turray said it was unanimously decided in the meeting to call off the strike as Shopian district is suffering from shortage of essential commodities and house hold items which has caused immense miseries to the people of town.

He said government had earlier announced that camp will be removed but no process has been started yet.

“The various representatives of district have threatened that if administration fails to meet the deadline of removing the camp they will make mass migration from the area,” Turay added.

He said it was also decided in the meeting to observe complete shutdown on October 4 and 7 to press for the demand of removing the Gagran camp from the area.

According to reports, the meeting was attended by several representatives of local traders federation, fruit growers, Shopian coordination committee, Bar Association, transporters and shopkeepers of the Shopian district.

It is pertinent to mention here that Shopian district was under curfew from September 8 till September 22. Then it observed complete shutdown against the innocent killing by 14Bn of CRPF in Gagran area earlier this month.
