Avalanche Hits Army Post in Kupwara, One killed

KUPWARA; A trooper was killed after an Indian Army post came under an avalanche in Machil sector of north Kashmir’s frontier Kupwara district on Thursday, reports said.

“Two troopers belonging to Army’s 5 ASSAM (D Company) were buried alive when a snow avalanche hit their post near Muthal top in Machil sector on Thursday afternoon,” a local news agency quoted its sources as saying.

Later, the Army launched a rescue operation and recovered one of the trooper in critical condition. “The injured soldier was shifted to the nearby hospital, where he succumbed to injuries,” the sources said. He was identified as Thoumdan Singh (belt No. 4372029-W).

Search for the missing trooper, Niak W Lampa Konyak, was in progress, the sources added.

On December 25, 2013, a Border Security Force (BSF) trooper Hawaldar Rotaz Singh died when he and his associate Sumesh Kumar of 69 battalion slipped from the mountain track at Machil Sector. Kumar’s body has not been retrieved yet. (GNS)
