Militant Attack in Sopore; 1 Killed 3 Injured

BARAMULLA: An Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police ASI Kafeel Ahmad was killed and three others were injured, after militants attacked on Police in Chankan area of Sopore in Baramulla district.

Contradictory reports were received from the area. Some suggest that it was a hit and run attack, militants lobbed grenade on a Police vehicle injuring four. Later among the injured one succumbed on way to hospital.

While others said, that Police launched a search operation in the area, as they were to intercept militants they opened fire, ensuring a gun-battle.

The militants managed to gave slip to the forces. The injured cops have been identified as Constables, Irfan Ahmed from Pulwama (124-SPR), Manzoor Ahmed Ganaie from Panzala Kupwara (822-SPR), and Zakir Ahmed Shiekh from Tahratpora Handwara (821-SPR). All the injured cops have been hospitalised.

The police said it launched an anti-militancy operation in Chanakhan area of Sopore with the assistance of the Army following information about the presence of militants in the area.

"As the cordon around the house where the militants were hiding was being tightened, they hurled a grenade and started indiscriminate firing at security forces," a police official said.

"They managed to escape from the site under cover of heavy gunfire." He added

The attack was first of its kind in the valley, this year. In previous year according to report by a Civil rights group, 46 civilians were killed by armed forces in militant related incidents.
