Govt Recommends Rs 83 Cr to Fight Monkey Menace

JAMMU; This is no grapevine, monkeys are creating havoc in agriculture fields and a committee constituted by the government has submitted its report suggesting recommendations involving an amount of Rs 83 crore.

Minister for Forest and Environment, Mian Altaf said the estimated cost of implementation of recommendations involved an amount of Rs 83 crore.

He was responding to a question of BJP MLA, Jagdish Raj Spolia in Legislative Assembly yesterday and said monkeys becoming nuisance was a typical problem exclusively prevalent in Jammu region.

Altaf said monkeys had been causing damage to the agriculture crops in Basholi area but the farmers continued to work in their fields. “For dealing with the problem posed by monkeys, a committee was constituted by the government vide order No 10-FST of 2012 dated April 1, 2013.”

He said the committee submitted its report to the government suggesting measures to deal with the problem.

Altaf said the proposal includes short-term and long-term measures to be implemented within a period of 10 years.

He said the estimated cost of implementation of recommendations involves an amount of Rs 83 crore and as soon as the funds were arranged, the recommendations would be implemented in a phased manner.

The minister said as an immediate step, Regional Wildlife Warden, Jammu had provided instructions to the Wildlife Warden, Kathua to capture the “rogue monkeys”.

People cannot deal with the monkeys on their own as the violators can be booked under Section 51 of J&K Wildlife Protection Act amendment 2002 and the detention could range from six months to seven years depending upon the gravity of the crime.

Besides, the violators have to pay a fine of no less than Rs 25,000. Altaf said the government would also contact the concerned civic and local authorities for taking an appropriate action in this regard under the relevant provisions of Jammu and Kashmir Wildlife Protection Act.
