JKLF March Foiled; Malik, Others Detained

SRINAGAR; Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik was detained here on Friday during a protest march. Malik and over 200 supporters marched to the city centre Lal Chowk against the closure of infamous Pathribal fake encounter case by Army authorities.

Malik and his supporters reached Lal Chowk shouting slogans and carrying banners against fake encounters in Kashmir. Police used batons to intercept the protesters. Malik and 13 supporters were detained and sent to a police station.

Shops and other businesses were already closed in the area because of a shutdown called by top resistance leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani to press for the demand of international probe in Dardpora killings of Feb 24.

"“Pathribal massacre in which Indian army killed seven innocent Kashmiris in cold blood is a symbol of Indian oppressive attitude against the people of Jammu Kashmir. People of Kashmir will not keep silent on the issue of Pathribal and our protest to bring the killers to justice will continue." said Malik.

Pertinently, 5 civilians were killed by armed forces in Pathribal village of Islamabad district on March 25, 2000. Army duped them as militants. According to locals, up to 17 men had been detained by the police and disappeared between 21–24 March and those who were killed were civilians. On 30 March, local authorities in Islamabad relented to growing public pressure, and agreed to exhume the bodies and conduct an investigation into the deaths.

The deceased were identified as two Juma Khan's both from Brariangan Islamabad (disappeared on 24th March), Bashir Ahmed Bhat (26) R/O: Hallen Islamabad, Mohammad Yousuf Malik (38) R/O: Sheerpora Islamabad and Zahoor Ahmad Dalal (23) R/O: Islamabad.

On 19 March 2012,The CBI (central Bureau of Investigation) told the Supreme Court of India that the fake encounter at Pathribal 12 years ago in which seven people were killed by Army personnel “were cold-blooded murders and the accused officials deserve to be meted out exemplary punishment.”

In June 2012, the Army conveyed its readiness to a Srinagar court to try the accused personnel in the military court. On 23rd January 2014, the Indian Army closed this Case as evidence collected by it did not establish a prima facie case against any of the accused.
