2 Insurgents Killed; Trooper Injured in Handwara Gunbattle

KUPWARA; Two cadres of LeT are believed dead in a major gunbattle with Indian forces in Handwara area of Kupwara district in northern Kashmir on Monday.

Superintendent of Police Handwara, Maqsood-uz-Zamaan, told from the site of the encounter that two militants, who were later identified as Abu Huraira and Abu Talha, got killed when the Jammu and Kashmir Police and troops of Rashtriya Rifles 6th Battalion carried out a raid on a militant hideout at Sheikh Mohalla of Malikpora, Vilgam, in Handwara area.

“The operation concluded at 2.00 p.m. when the second militant Abu Talha died. Earlier in the beginning, Abu Huraira, who was LeT’s Divisional Commander, died in the encounter”, Mr Zamaan said.

According to a tip off, two Pakistani cadres of LeT were present at the ‘Kothar’. The Army immediately launched an operation alongwith the District Police.

The SP maintained that there was no collateral damage and the entire civilian population was safe but he said that Major Kotwal of RR 6th Battalion sustained injuries. He was rushed to a hospital for treatment. One AK-47 rifle has been recovered from the debris of the hideout destroyed during the operation.
