Body of Kashmiri Doctor Killed in Libya Reaches Srinagar

SRINAGAR; A Kashmiri medico working in Libya was killed by unidentified gunmen on Sunday.

The doctor identified as Dr Irfan Ali, 23, a resident of Shalimar in the outskirts of Kashmir, was working in the country since August 2013. He was part of a group of eight medicos appointed by a hospital in the Derna area of the country. Ali was a physiotherapist.

According to the family, Ali was kidnapped by unidentified gunmen on Sunday and his body was recovered a day later.

A spokesman of Ministry of External Affairs told that Indian Mission in Libya is in constant touch with local authorities to investigate the matter.

Derna, an eastern town of Libya, has been witnessing disturbances after the downfall of Muammar Gaddafi government by the National Transitional Council (NTC) backed by NATO.

The MEA said Irfan was killed by some “miscreants but the actual position will be conveyed soon.”

The Indian Ambassador to Libya, Anil Tringunayat, was quoted by Libya Herald as saying that he was alarmed by the killing of the young man who, he said, was representative of the 1,600 doctors that had come to Libya to help its people during and after the revolution.
