Clashes and Curfew Continue in North Kashmir on Day 3; Twelve Injured; Dozens Detained

SRINAGAR; As restrictions were lifted after two consecutive days of an undeclared curfew over the killing of a teenage boy, life in Srinagar city came to normal on Monday with the people resuming their routine work.
However, authorities continued with the restrictions in Bandipora district for the third consecutive day with several stone hurling incidents reported from the area. The clashes erupted at the town-square, when the protesters hurled stones on the deployment of forces in the area. Forces resorted to teargas shelling to disperse the angry protesters. Clashes reportedly caused minor injuries to both forces and the protesters.
On the other side, Hajan, Naidkhai and Sumbal remained under intense curfew on Monday with a heavy contingent of army’s Rashtriya Rifles (RR) deployed in the area. People including women held protest demonstrations against the Farhat Dar’s killing at Naidkhai and Hajan area.
Trying to thwart the protests the forces sealed the roads and tried to disperse the crowd. Stone pelting erupted in the areas with the people raising pro freedom slogans. Forces fired several tear gas shells in air to diffuse the clashes. Later people in Hajan and Naidkhai areas accused that CRPF of barging into homes and damaging the property there.
People in large numbers took out a protest march at Sadarkoot and Chak Sadarkoot towards Hajan. Clashes also occurred in these areas after the forces foiled the protest marches. Reports of stone pelting incidents were also received from Tral in South Kashmir where at the main bus stand, people hurled stones at a CRPF bunker. Forces later dispersed the crowd by firing several teargas shells.
Retreating poll boycott call, Dukhtaran-e-Miliat (DeM) chief Asiya Andrabi addressed the protesters at Naidkhai area via phone. In her address, the DeM chief while expressing grief over Farhat’s death urged people to stay away from the forth coming elections.
Reports coming from North Kashmir said that the clashes between youth and forces erupted at Palhallan when the police vehicle was attacked by protesters in the area. Police used tear gas shells to disperse the mob. The situation remained tense till late evening hours.
More than 12 people were injured in Monday’s clashes at various places of valley. While as dozens of protesters including JKLF and Human right activists were detained today.
Life resumed to normal after two days as the authorities already had announced that there will be no restrictions imposed in state’s summer capital on Monday. There was a smooth vehicular movement on roads with the markets witnessing a huge rush of people- buying essentials. CRPF men were seen sprinkling colors at each other and celebrated holi with gaiety.
Most of the resistance leaders continue to remain under police confinement including Huriyat Conference (M) Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Shabbir Ahmad Shah, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai, Zafar Akbar Butt, Nayeem Ahmad Khan and Muhammad Ashraf Laya besides others.
According to police situation remained normal across the valley barring stray incidents of stone pelting at Hajan and Naidkhai. “No one was hurt till last reports came in,” the police statement said.
