Handwara Villages Face Drinking Water Shortage

HANDWARA; Although Sodal village of tehsil Handwara is known for its overwhelming water resources but due to alleged apathy of Public Health Engineering (PHE), the residents here are suffering immensely due to the shortage of drinking water.

Residents of Shahlal, Wadipora, Chalpora and other villages of tehsil Handwara complain of severe shortage of drinking water.

Women of these villages said that they have to walk miles to fetch water from nullahs.
They said many villagers are suffering from cholera and gastroenteritis due to the consumption of contaminated water.

“The consumption of contaminated water has led to the outbreak of water-borne diseases like cholera and gastroenteritis in Handwara villages and authorities are doing nothing to address the problem. In absence of shortage of tap water, we are forced to walk miles to fetch water from open Nallah Lalcol,” complained Gh Rasool Malik of Sodal.

The locals said that the taps have run dry for the past four weeks and despite repeated pleas, the Public Health Engineering (PHE) division Handwara has failed to restore water supply to the villages.

They threatened to lodge protests against the department if the supply was not restored at the earliest.
“People complained that the water pipe running from main water tank has burst open and the water is leaking which is adding to the woes of people,” residents said, adding the PHE is not paying any attention to the problem and people are forced to use contaminated water from nallahs.

The locals demanded that round the clock tanker service should be provided to them till the water supply is restored to normal. ”

Reports said that residents of Shah Mohala, Wadipora, and Challpora in Handwara tehsil were also facing severe problems due to acute shortage of drinking water.

The locals of these areas have appealed the MLA concerned to use his influence to restore water supply to the villages.

A senior official of PHE division Handwara Viqar Hussain told that we will send a team including AE and JE on spot to check and will restore the water supply soon.
