Heavy Snowfall Cripples Kashmir

SRINAGAR; Heavy snowfall lashed Kashmir on Tuesday night, throwing life out of gear and cutting off the Valley from the rest of the world with Srinagar-Jammu national highway closed for traffic.

Air traffic was affected as no flights could land at Srinagar Airport, due to bad weather.

10 inches of snow was recorded in Srinagar. Meanwhile 2 ft snow was reported in South Kashmir's Shopian town.

Due to the snowfall in upper reaches and continued rainfall in plains, winter chill returned to Kashmir.

"The bad weather conditions will continue till March 12. Higher reaches are likely to witness moderate to heavy snowfall and plains would receive light to heavy rainfall," Director MeT office Sonam Lotus told.

Normal life in Kashmir has been crippled as roads in the summer capital and other townships remained waterlogged.

Kashmir University has postponed all its exams, including the PG entrance and KAS exams which were scheduled to be held today.
