Kashmir Shuts Over Lolab Killings; Four Protesters Detained

SRINAGAR; A shutdown was observed in Kashmir Valley Friday against the killings that took place in Dardpora forests of Kupwara district on Monday.

Shops and business establishments remained closed due to the strike call. However, private transport plied on the roads in some parts of the valley.

The police had made elaborate security arrangements to thwart any protests. Police and paramilitary personnel, wearing riot gear, were deployed at major intersections and sensitive areas. Incidents of stone pelting were reported from Maisuma, Rajouri Kadal and Naidkhai after Friday prayers.

A police official told "Situation remained normal throughout Kashmir valley on Friday. However, stray incidents of stone pelting were reported from Rajouri Kadal in Srinagar, Naid Khai and Hajan in Bandipora. There are no reports of injury to anyone so far."

Reports from various district headquarters including Shopian, Baramulla, Islamabad, Kupwara and other areas said that shops and business establishments remained closed while traffic was mostly off the roads.

Restrictions remained in vogue in Lolab Valley while in most part of the frontier district of Kupwara, situation remained peaceful. At Buhipora, Kupwara, a procession was taken out after Friday prayers. The protestors demanded that the identity of the slain ‘militants’ be revealed.

Protests were also reported from south Kashmir’s Pulwama town. Eyewitnesses told that scores of youth staged a protest at New Colony in Pulwama after which police swung into action and allegedly arrested four youth.  The arrests of youth sparked protest at Prichoo area where scores of youth took to streets and staged a protest. Minor incident of Stone-pelting was also reported from volatile Shopian town.

Top pro-freedom leaders including Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Shabir Ahmad Shah, Nayeem Khan, Muhammad Yousuf Shah were either detained by police or placed under house arrest.

Geelani had called for a complete shutdown, demanding an impartial probe into the killings by an international investigation agency.

It is pertinent to mention here that five people were killed in Dardpora on Monday. Army and Police is claiming that the deceased men are foreign militants while locals challenged the police claims and said the deceased are civilians. Authorities imposed curfew on Tuesday. Police has also detained three youth on charges what they sad, spreading rumors about the death of civilians.
