Protests Over Expulsion of Students
SRINAGAR; Protests broke out in some parts over the expulsion of 67 students from Swami Viveknanda Subharti University Meerut.
According to reports, Youth after offering Friday prayers pelted stones on Police personnel in Gagren area of Shopian. Police used teargas shelling to chase away the protesters who retaliated by throwing stones. Clashes continue till the last reports came.
In Kashmir University Campus, dozens of students also held demonstration against the expulsion of students from Meerut University. Youth shouting slogans and carrying placards, written with the message, "For us they are tourists and for them we are terrorists" marched through the campus.
In Government Medical College Srinagar, scores of protestors staged peaceful demonstration against the slapping of charges and the treatment given to Kashmiri students by University administration.
In South Kashmir’s Islamabad (Anantnag) town, a peaceful protest was staged soon after Friday prayers. The protest rally was led by Mirwaiz South Kashmir Qazi Yasir. Police however, did not allow protestors to proceed towards the main town.
In Baramulla, protestors clashed with police while the police exercised maximum restrain and did not use force.
Scores of protestors resorted to stone pelting as soon as pro-freedom leaders including Shabir Ahmad Shah, Nayeem Ahmad Khan and Mushtaq-ul-Islam entered into Hajin town. When police tried to stop these leaders from moving ahead, the protestors amid pro-freedom slogans pelted stones on the police.
A police official said that situation throughout the valley remained peaceful. However, stray incidents of stone pelting were reported from Garage Ganderbal, Naidkhai, Hajjan in Sumbal, Cement bridge Baramulla and Gagran Shopian this afternoon. No one was hurt.
The call for peaceful protests was given by Syed Ali Shah Geelani to condemn the expulsion of 67 students from a Meerut university for cheering Pakistan's victory over India on Sunday in Asia Cup.
