SBSE Directed to Clarify on Inclusion of Chapters on Ill Effects of Polythene
SRINAGAR; Jammu and Kashmir High Court has asked the State Board of School Education (SBSE) to clarify whether it wanted to include chapters in the text books on ill-effects of polythene as directed by the court or would only print some information on the cover of text books.
The court had passed directions on September 26 and November 4, 2013, to SBSE not to spare any doubt that a chapter on ill-effects of polythene or polythene carry bags required to be included in the text books.
A Division Bench of High Court comprising Chief Justice M M Kumar and Justice Hasnian Massodi passed the direction after amicus curie Zafar Ahmad Shah submitted that the issue warrants clarification as the SBSE in its report has said it seeks to project menace of polythene by creating an information box on the back cover of the textbooks of classes eigth, ninth and 10th and showing dangerous effects of polythene.
SBSE said it would include anti-polythene footers in the text books of the said classes. It informed that during academic session April 2015 for summer zone areas of Jammu division, to highlight ill-effects of polythene and polythene carry bags and related issues.
However, the court wanted to know about the directions passed by it on September 26 and November 4, 2013.
The court directed that a clarification in compliance be filed before the next date of hearing.
Registration of 56 units manufacturing polythene in Jammu and Kathua, meanwhile, has been cancelled and four have changed their line of captivity, the court was informed by the State Pollution Control Board (SPCB). However, the body has admitted that no alternative to polythene carry bags has been found so far, but they assured the court that a decision before the next date of hearing will be taken.
The court, however, said if any such decision is taken by the Board then the same be placed on record by filing a fresh status report.
