SP Altaf Khan Not To Be Rewarded With UN Deputation: CCS
SRINAGAR; A senior Kashmir police official’s deputation with United Nations Peacekeeping Forces has been cancelled over his involvement in human rights abuses.
Authorities in Kashmir were considering deputing Superintendent of Police, Altaf Ahmad Khan, who is posted at Zewan, to the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces in September 2013 last year.
SP Khan has been accused of involvement in the rape and torture of a female victim in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on July 3, 2004, and the alleged torture and custodial killing of Nazim Rashid Shalla, a resident of Sopore on July 31 2011.
The State Human Rights Commission had confirmed the crimes and the role of SP Khan in them, and recommended action against him.
The Coalition of Civil Society (CCS), a human rights group in Kashmir, had sent separate communications to the government in Kashmir and the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations [DPKO], New York, objecting to his deputation.
“Based on reliable information received, due to these communications and the ongoing public campaign, SP Altaf Ahmad Khan’s deputation to the UN has been cancelled,” Khurram Pervez, an activist with CCS, wrote on his Facebook wall.
