Girl's Body Fished Out from Jehlum After 14 Days
SRINAGAR; The ordeal of a family in Jammu and Kashmir’s summer capital ended on Wednesday with locals on the outskirts of the city retrieving the body of their teenage girl who jumped into river Jehlum on March 20, this year.
The body of 14-year-old grammar school student from Batmaluen was afloat when spotted by locals near Noorbagh Palapora. Witnesses said people fished out the body and she was identified by her family.
The family of a teenage girl had on Thursday last week had accused that the police of taking bribe to fish out her body.
The eight class student had jumped off into the freezing waters of Jhelum from Amira Kadal in the City Centre.
Senior Superintendent of police Amit Kumar had said: “We are trying our level best to fish out the body.” He said he will look into the complaints of the family.
After her suicide, to prevent such incidents, the Road and Buildings department has started fencing the bridge.
Amira Kadal has turned out to be most vulnerable spot for people to commit suicide by jumping from it into flowing river Jhelum.
The department will erect seven feet high fencing leaving no room for anybody to jump into the river from it.
A police press release issued here had said they are continuously making all efforts to retrieve the body and the search operation is going on expeditiously.
The release said after the suicide 'immediately two police parties backed up by motor boats from river police are continuously used to fish out her body.
In a significant development first time in operations of such nature elite Marcos (Marine commanders) of Indian Navy were pressed into service on 21th March. Marcos has placed best 16 divers and speed boats at disposal led by an officer of the rank of Major. Police had also deployed its men on night hours too for spotting the body.
Earlier, the government fenced Lal Mandi pedestrian-bridge after a 10th class student from Biscoe School had jumped into the river while swimming. However, the boy had failed to swim across and drowned in the river.
