Sarpanches preparing for state wide agitation
RAJOURI; 13, Aug 2012: Large number of Panches and Sarpanches came on streets on Monday in border district Rajouri to protest against the state government for making the institution defunct by denying legal powers to it. The Sarpanches gathered under the banner of Jammu Kashmir Panchayat Conference ( JKPC) staged a dharna in Mandi chowk area which continued hours together due to which traffic movement remained disrupted. However, the agitation was suspended till Eid with the commitment to bring the movement at its logical end.
Sources said, large number of Sarpanches belonging to all blocks of Rajouri district gathered in Dakbunglow Rajouri on Monday from where they took out a protest procession against the state government for it its failure in empowering Panchayats in the state. The Sarpanches belonging to all political parties including ruling National Conference and Congress participated in the protest demonstration. The procession later reached at Mandi chowk where they staged a dharna which continued hours together.
Addressing the gathering of elected representatives of the people Convener Jammu Kashmir Panchayat Conference Shafiq Mir said that state government has deceived them and nothing has been given to Panchayats as promised in the act and by Jammu and Kashmir government. Shafiq Mir said that the time has come when this movement will be pushed to its logical end. Mir said that the basic problem in the state of Jammu and Kashmir is the denial of democracy. Demanding implementation of 73rd amendment of Indian constitution in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, Mir said that nothing less than central Panchayati Raj system was acceptable to them. Announcing the decision to suspend agitation till Eid, Mir said that the agitation will be geared up after eid and it will be brought to its logical end. In fact, the matter got boiled in Rajouri after a child development officer at Rajouri refused to tolerate interference of Panchayat members in his department. Even he miss behaved with some of the Sarpanches of block Rajouri when they visited his office. Others who spoke on the occasion included, Sarpanch Darbar Chowdhary, Sarpanch Raj Kumar, Sarpanch Ch . Mir Hussain. Sarpanch Abdul Khaliq Chowdhary, Sarpanch Ashwani Kumar, Sarpanch Darvinder Singh, Sarpanch Sanjive Kumar alias Mangoo, Sarpanch Bader Din, Sarpanch, Mohammad Hanief, Sarpanch Fazal Chowhan, Sarpanch Gian Chand, Sarpanch Vevek Sharma and others.
