After baby, ‘medical negligence’ kills mother
SRINAGAR; 13, Sep 2012: Soon after alleged medical negligence at L D Hospital resulted in the death of her baby in the womb, Mehbooba a patient from district Pulwama succumbed Wednesday after being shifted to SMHS hospital for further treatment.
Mehbooba wife of Abdul Hamid Bhat of Nehalpora Pulwama was admitted to LD Maternity Hospital on Tuesday morning. According to her relatives she died due to “improper” treatment in the hospital.
“Doctors are responsible for death of my sister and her baby as they delayed the treatment.
They were callous in attending her,” said Parvaiz Ahmad Yatoo, brother of Mehboba. He accused doctors for treating her sister “improperly”.
“The doctors on duty didn’t show any seriousness and my sister died for want of treatment,” Yatoo added.
Terming the statement made by Medical Superintendent of LD hospital as baseless, he said, “If the patient was suffering from leakage of membranes, why doctors did not agree to go for a surgery?
“Seeing the callous attitude of doctors here, we tried to shift her to some private hospital but they (doctors at LD Hospital) assured us a normal delivery. We broke our silence and clamored for her surgery or referral to any other hospital but all in vain,” Yatoo further said.
On Tuesday protests broke out at Lal Ded Maternity Hospital against the alleged negligence of doctors when Mehbooba’s baby died following removal of her uterus after she was admitted to the hospital.
Yatoo accused the doctors for keeping Mehbooba in labor room and delaying surgery which according to him made her condition critical.
“After keeping her in the labor room for some time, she was taken to operation theatre but was immediately taken back to labor room,” Yatoo said, adding “We were asked to arrange blood, which we did without any delay but still the doctors brought her close to death.”
Mehbooba was shifted to SMHS hospital for further treatment where she succumbed. “Whether she was dead or alive when she was referred to SMHS Hospital is a mystery.”
Meanwhile, police has registered a case against some doctors of LD Hospital after relatives of Mehbooba alleged that the lady died due to negligence of the doctors.
“A criminal case of negligence has been registered against doctors of LD Hospital in Police Station Rajbagh,” SHO Rajbagh Riyaz Ahmad told media over phone.
He said the patient died on Wednesday evening and her body was handed over to her relatives for last rites.
Talking to media, Medical Superintendent SMHS Hospital, Nazir Hussain Chowdhary said he has no idea of how the patient died at the hospital. He said a committee has been constituted to ascertain the cause of death of Mehbooba.
Asked that was the patient alive when admitted to SMHS Hospital, Chowdhary said he has no idea about that and can’t say anything till committee submits its report.
“I can’t have details of every patient admitted here. Let us wait for the committee report,” the Medical Superintendent said.
Medical Superintendent LD hospital, Mushtaq Ahmad Rather termed the allegations of family as baseless.
“The patient was not dead when she was referred to SMHS hospital. We have already asked the committee to submit report within 48 hours. The accused doctors will be penalized if found guilty,” Rather said.
