Holy Quran desecrated in Handwara
BARAMULLA: 06, Sep 2012: Protests broke out in Palpora, Qaziabad village some 12 km from north Kashmir’s Handwara town, after unknown miscreants desecrated Holy Quran, sending shock waves in entire Handwara tehsil on Thursday.
Reports said hundreds of people took to Baramulla-Kupwara highway and staged protest demonstrations Thursday morning soon after the news of desecration spread in the adjacent villages.
An eyewitness said that at the time of Zuhr (afternoon) prayers, some unknown persons had barged into the Masjid and desecrated the Holy Quran.
“This morning, we saw Holy Quran desecrated,” witness said. “An independent probe should be ordered into the incident and culprits brought to book.”
He said such incidents were unacceptable and intolerable for every Muslim.
As the protests started, people from other areas including Kachloo, Khahipora, Sahipora, Wangam, Thokerpora, Budrah, Kralgund, Supernaghama other villages joined the protests blocking the Baramulla-Kupwara highway rendering thousands of vehicles stranded on highway, compelling them to opt for other routes to reach their destinations.
While people were angry over the incident, the situation was under control when reports last came in.
“When people of the area went to the Masjid, they saw the Holy Quran was desecrated and scattered. We will continue our protests against these acts,” said Nazir, a protestor.
Meanwhile, a large contingent of police was deployed in the area to maintain law and order situation.
“The situation in the area has been brought under control,” a police official said. “A case under FIR 50/2012 under section 295 has also been registered at Kralgund Police Station.”
