Police arrested Syed Ali Geelani outside his residence.
SRINAGAR; 07, Sep 2012: Police arrested All Parties Hurriyat Conference Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani outside his Hyderpora residence when he coming to offer Friday prayers.
Along with him Hurriyat Spokesperson G. M Bhat was also arrested.
Police is preventing the Veteran leader to offer Friday prayers and other religious duties since April 2012.
The forum spokesman in a statement in Srinagar said, “A police vehicle has been stationed at the main gate of Syed Ali Gilani’s house while over a dozen police personnel have laid a siege around it.”
Hurriyat Spokesperson in a statement termed it as ridiculous and surprising the statement of the government lawyer in the High Court that Geelani had not been placed under house arrest.
The spokesman said that the veteran leader’s continued confinement to his residence had badly affected his health. “Geelani comes out of his residence on every Friday with the intention to offer Friday prayers but the police personnel deployed at the main gate prevent him from crossing it,” he said, terming it a sheer interference in the religious affairs of people.
He appealed to the Ulema, Muftis and Imams to register their protest against the restrictions imposed on Geelani to offer Friday prayers.
Pertinently, Syed Ali Gilani’s case came up for hearing in the High Court in Srinagar on Thursday where Justice Mansoor Ahmad Mir heard the arguments of the lawyers from both sides and listed the case for next hearing on September 11 (Tuesday). The High Court Bar Association President, Zafar Amin Qureshi is pleading the case of the veteran leader.
