Security agency dupes dozens of unemployed youth
SRINAGAR; 05, Sep 2012: An agency, providing security services to the Dental College Srinagar has duped dozens of unemployed youth after swindling their hard earned wages, which was due to them after they worked for the agency for more than a year.
A group of the aggrieved youth said, the agency namely Swelco Security Services appointed them as security guards for discharging their duties at the Governemnt Dental college Srinagar during the year 2010-11, however, despite completion of one year of work, not a single penny has been paid to them as wages.
“48 men were working for the agency, after the owner of the agency Mohammad Amin of Anantnag hired us in view of his earning a contract from the Dental college. Despite working hard day and night, we were not paid even a single penny,” said the group of duped youth.
They said despite repeated requests, the contractor on one pretext or the other evaded payment of their dues. “He would always tell us that once his bills get cleared from the Dental college, he will pay us our dues, however, despite most of his bills getting cleared, the contractor did not pay us even a single penny,” said Mohammd Iqbal from Khanyar.
They alleged that the Dental college administration cleared bills in favour of the contractor despite their request to the Principal and Medical Superintendent to stop his bills. However, on termination of the contract, the agency relieved the employees in July this year asking them to wait for release of bills by the college, the added.
When contacted, Principal of the Govt Dental College Srinagar, Dr Riyaz Farooq expressed helplessness in the matter. “We have given contract to a firm and they employ manpower on their own. Managing work force and paying due sto them is the responsibility of the agency and we cant interfere in it,” he said.
However, he said he has asked his Accounts Officer to look into the grievances of the youth who have been cheated by the contractor. “I have asked my accounts officer to examine the issue. He will call the owner of the agency and ask him to clear dues in favour of the youth,” he said, adding, the contractor has a bill pending with his office and that most of his dues have already been cleared by the College.
“They just earn a small amount of 2 to 3 thousand rupees and we are fully sympathetic towards them,” he added.
