Panchayat ghar torched in Sopore

BARAMULLA; 20, July 2013: A Panchayat Ghar was torched by unknown persons during late night in north Kashmir's Sopore town in Baramulla District.

Unidentified persons stormed a Panchayat Ghar in Tarzoo village in Baramulla district and set it on fire. The Panchayat Ghar was gutted completely and later police and paramilitaries reached the spot.

The Sub-District Magistrate Sopore, Dr. Syed Hanief Balkhi, while confirming the incident, said, "Protesters torched Panchayat Ghar at around 11 pm on Friday late night," adding, "but there was no loss of life in the incident and situation is under control."

Police have registered a Fir no 66\2013\us\436 RPC.

However Sarpanch of the area, Fayaz Ah Naikoo claims that "It was not the handiwork of protesters."

"A day before the incident happened, we had called a meeting in which it was decided to terminate a ward member for some reasons. It was after that meeting that Panchayat House was torched. Even the file in which the record of the previous meeting was written was also missing. I apprehend that it was set ablaze by Mohammad Akbar Malla- the ward member who was terminated from Panchayat committee”. He added.
