Ramban killings Aftermath: Curfew lifted; Shutdown & Protests continue in valley on Day 3
KN DESK: 21, July 2013: As the Indian authorities today morning lifted Curfew from all parts of Occupied Kashmir, however troopers were deployed at a few volatile areas to prevent people from holding protests. A complete valley-wide shutdown was observed to protest against the Gool Ramban Massacre. As the protests broke out authorities once again clamped curfew in some areas.
As the Curfew was lifted however protests broke out and once again Indian authorities imposed curfew in Police stations of Rainawari, Maharajgunj, Safakadal, Khanyar, Nowhatta and Zadibal.
Protests begin in Downtown areas of Srinagar after the Fajar prayers. Early morning youth pelted stones on Indian troopers who in retaliation lobbed tear-canisters. In Nowshehra area, reports said that hundreds of youth took to streets and held strong protests demonstration. However they were intercepted by forces leading to violent clashes. Pitched battles continued till evening.
In the afternoon session, 2 women were beaten up by Paramilitary troopers in Khanyar area of Srinagar, which resulted in clashes between the people and forces. 2 more women sustained injuries.
Protesters also pelted stones on Indian troopers in Noorbagh area of Srinagar. Later Police chased away the protesters and pushed a youth who was not the part of the protest (as per locals) from terrace, resulting in severe injuries to spinal cord and head. The youth has been identified as Jan Mohammad and has been admitted in SKIMS Soura where he is battling for his life.
Reports of Stone-pelting incidents were also received from some other parts of the city including HMT, Rajouri Kadal, Baba Demb, Habbakadal, Barzulla, Soura, Batamaloo, Tengpora, Zakoora, Gonikhan and Maharaja Bazar.
Protests and Stone-pelting reports were received from Warpora, Yunsoo and Khanpora bridge of Old town Baramulla. 11 people including 5 paramilitary troopers were injured during the clashes. Two protesters sustained injuries by the police action. A youth identified as Danish Moon of Jamia Qadeem Old town was shot in neck by Indian forces at Khanpora Bridge. The injured has been referred to Hospital.
Reports from Ganderbal district said that youth staged protests at Saloora Crossing however police swung into action and chased them away.
Youth erected barricades on the Srinagar- Leh highway at some places in Ganderbal and Kangan areas, however police rushed to the spot and removed them.
Forces remained deployed in market places at Safapora, Dhobipora, Manigam, Lar, Pandach, Nagbal, Tullamulla, Baroosa, Beehama Chowk, Tawheed Chowk, Main Bazar Kangan, Court Road Kangan, Jamia Market Kangan and village market Kangan. However the situation remained peaceful at these places.
Reports of complete shutdown were received from Handwara Tehsil of Kupwara district and the people took to streets in Langate area.
Bandipora district of north Kashmir also witnessed a complete shutdown and the authorities imposed restrictions to contain the movement of people.
Amid complete shutdown and restrictions, protests against Gool killings continued for the third running day in several areas of South Kashmir. Stone-pelting reports were received from Pulwama and Shopian town of South Kashmir.
Stone-pelting reports also recieved from Shopian main twon. Youth pelted stones on DC Office Complex Shopian, in retaliation troopers lobbed dozens of tear canisters to chase away the protesers. Later a Policeman was caught in civil dress in main market Shopian by protesters. The policeman was carrying a bag containing 3 bottles of wine and some clothes. He was beaten up severely. Police also arrested two boys near Bhutto Chowk Shopian.
Meanwhile, the residents of Kulgam town accused police of letting loose a reign of terror in the area. Reports said that though curfew was officially lifted from Kulgam today, however strict restrictions were imposed in several areas. “Police and paramilitary forces wearing riot gears and armed with sticks were deployed in strength to foil any attempts of protests.
“The police and CRPF men pelt stones on the houses and break the window panes and then arrest the youth on the charges of stone pelting and in turn demand ransom to release them,” said the residents of Qaimou Kulgam.
Pro-freedom leaders continued to remain under house-arrest or jails on the third consecutive day.
