Shopian shuts again; Meeting held with DC Shopian

SHOPIAN; 23, Aug 2013: Life came to standstill in South Kashmir’s Shopian district today again after normalcy returned yesterday.

All the shops and business establishments remained closed. Traffic remained off from roads however schools reopened today after 6 days. All the residential areas where from the protests broke out in previous days are under siege.

Pertinently, Shopian is observing a complete strike from 17th of August after Police allegedly barged inside the two residential houses in Bonabazar locality of Shopian and damaged some house-hold goods.

However on 22nd August, the normalcy returned but couldn’t survive enough as the youth once again appeared in the main market during the evening time and urged shopkeepers to observe shutdown until the detained youth will be released.

A delegation of Shopian Trade Federation, Bar Association Shopian, Auqaf Committee and along with some elders of the town today hold a meeting with Deputy Commissioner Shopian Bashir Ahmad Bhat. In the meeting the Deputy Commissoner framed a committee consiting 8 members – DC Shopian, SSP Shopian, 2 Members of Trade Federation, 2 Members of Bar Association and 2 members of Auqaf. The Committee will submit its report on the alleged highhandedness of Police, damage caused by CRPF troopers to shopkeepers and release of arrested youth. Meanwhile it was also decided that there will be no strike in the town from tomorrow.

The youth are demanding the release of the arrested youth during the fresh arrest spree and the compensation to the two residential houses of Abdul Rashid Mir and Abdul Salam Naikoo in Naik Mohalla Shopian.

Jammu and Kashmir People’s League Chairman Mukhtar Ahmad Waza along with senior leaders Yasmeen Raja, Imtiyaz Ahmad reshi Farooq Mamoosi, Mommad Musadiq Aaadil and Abdul Majeed Wani and addressed Friday congregations today in Jamia Masjid Shopian Waza, while addressing the congregations condemned the oppression of Indian armed forces from past one week in the district during which number of innocent youths has been booked by security forces on false and baseless allegations?, and appealed international community to intervene.

Waza said that India and its armed forces were using every available oppressive and brutal tactics to repress the freedom voices and said that people of the state who laid their lives for the resolution of Kashmir issue will not deter to give sacrifices till the martyr’s mission gets logical conclusion.

In an another statement, National Front Chairman Nayeem Ahmad Khan has demanded an immediate and unconditional release of all the arrested youth in the town.

Earlier the veteran Hurriyat Leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani in a statement alleged that "Police is arresting the young boys to collect money from them." adding "Police and Indian troopers have created a reign of terror in the town."
