Youm-ul-Quds Observed in Kashmir
SRINAGAR; 02, Aug 2013: Like elsewhere in the Islamic countries, many Muslims in Kashmir took to streets in groups after Friday prayers to show their support with Palestine on the International Quds Day. They chanted anti-Israel slogans and also burn the country’s flags.
A group of Shia Muslims led by Islamic scholar Maulana Abid took out a procession from Abi Guzar near Lal Chowk area of Srinagar.
Carrying flags with the name of Hazrat Ali, the fourth caliph of Islam particularly revered by Shia Muslims, inscribed on them, the protestors shouted ‘Marg Bar Israel’ (death to Israel) and ‘Free Palestine and Al-Aqsa Mosque’. They burnt an Israeli flag as the rhythmic slogans grew louder.
The Quds Day or the Yaum-e-Quds was started by revolutionary Iranian scholar Ayotallah Khomeini in 1979 against the Israeli occupation of Palestine. The Khomeini declared “liberation of Palestine” a religious duty upon all Muslims.
The protestors, chanting ‘Ittehaad e Muslimeen Zindabaad’ (Long live unity of Muslims), also called for unity among different sects of Islam.
“We are all one. We have one Quran, one prophet. So we have been ordered to hold steadfast to one rope,” the Islamic scholar who addressed the protestors said.
Similar protests were reported from areas like Sadrabal near Hazratbal area, Rainwari and Nowhatta near the Grand Mosque.
In downtown Srinagar, angry youth clashed with the police after the Friday prayers. They threw stones at the police and paramilitaries who used force to disperse them.
