Brown sugar worth crores seized in North Kashmir

KUPWARA; 18, Sep 2013:  Police on Wednesday claimed to have recovered huge quantity of brown sugar along with arms and ammunition at Karnah sector in North Kashmir’s frontier Kupwara district.

Official sources while talking to GNS said that troops of 5/5 GR and Police during routine checking intercepted a vehicle bearing registration number JK09C-6684 (Tata Sumo) at Karnah in Kupwara district today afternoon.

“1.2 kiligram of brown sugar along with a pistol, two magazines were recovered from the vehicle during searches,” sources said, adding the driver Iliyas Malik along with ten other passengers travelling in the vehicle was detained by the joint team for questioning.

A case under FIR number 47/2013 under section 7/25 IA Act has been registered in the Police Station Karnah and further investigations have been taken up in this regard, sources added.

Official sources said the cost of seized brown sugar is estimated to be in crores in international market.

Pertinently, reports of smuggling are on rise in North Kashmir since long. Reports of nexus between Police and smugglers have also come to fore with more and more youth becoming addicted to narcotics and drugs which has in long way led to rising crimes in the society. (GNS)
