JKLF March Foiled; Malik with Several others Detained

SRINAGAR; 13, Sep 2013: Authorities foiled Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front's programme of holding 'sit-in-protest' in Lal chowk today against the killings of 5 youth in South Kashmir Shopian town since last saturday.

Witnesses said soon after the Friday congregation got over, hundreds of people led by Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chief Mohammad Yasin Malik marched from a local Mosque towards the clock tower in Lal Chowk.

Authorities had placed strict restrictions in the area after Malik had announced that he would led a protests rally against the killing of five youth in southern Shopian district.

As the marchers reached close to the clock tower, a posse of government forces stationed since morning, lobbed tear smoke shells. "Malik along with his supporters was detained," JKLF members said.

The tear gas shelling was responded by stone hurling by the marchers, witnesses said. Massive stone hurling clashes were going on when this report was filed.

The government forces have been put on high alert after pro-freedom leaders asked people to protests after the Friday congregation.
